Abelone Melesse is a 19 year old rap singer who is getting a lot of publicly in Ethiopia, Norway and the rest of the world after her appearance at the Norway Got Talent (Norske Talenter). Her fame and adoration has gone viral after her clip has been shared on popular Ethiopian social media links in 2014.
Abelone is Ethiopian by origin but born and raised in Norway.
Driven by humanity and the enthusiasm to help her country of origin, she engaged in a project called 10,000 happy birthdays that aims to help young mothers during pregnancy with no complications in Ethiopia and other African countries. At a fundraising concert organized for this project, Abelone made a rap performance in Amharic and English on the situation of African mothers-a song she made especially for this concert and which has made a big impression. The name of the song is “Welaj Enat” in Amharic which means “Mother”. One verse in the song reads, “Even if we are on the other side of the world, we have to be loud and clear, because if we fear, no one will hear, and there won’t be no change next year.”
Due to her interest to work on women and children’s issues in Ethiopia and beyond, Abelone became a UNICEF National Ambassador to Ethiopia on 20 November 2014.
Abelone has been actively engaged in different activities in line with her new role as a UNICEF National Ambassador to Ethiopia.
On 21 November 2014, Abelone performed three songs including one song dedicated to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at a big concert organized by the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth Affairs and UNICEF for International Day of the Girl Child.
During the same month, Abelone has been invited as a guest of honour to deliver a speech at the Launch of The Lancet Every Newborn Series at the Hilton Hotel in the presence of high-level officials from the Federal Ministry of Health, UNICEF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Save the Children and other partners.
In addition, Abelone gave a keynote address at the launch of the Ending Early and Child Marriage Campaign at the African Union organized by UNICEF, Ministry of Women, Children and Youth Affairs and the African Union.
In addition, Abelone has done extensive interviews with the national and international media regarding her new appointment which has created wide media coverage on print/web based and broadcast media channels. She has also done a PSA on girl’s empowerment which has been released for the public on YouTube. Abelone also joined UNICEF and the rest of the world by recording the imagine song with her scenic voice.
In January this year, Abelone attended a conference on Maternal Health and had the opportunity to share her story on her new role as a UNICEF National Ambassador and why she finds the issues very crucial. On International Women’s Day, Abelone was invited by Ethiopian Women’s Association in Norway joined by high level Norwegian politicians where she had the opportunity to deliberate a speech and perform her songs on behalf of the women in Norway and in Ethiopia about women’s rights.
This year, Abelone released a new single on 11th June which has been published on iTunes and Spotify.
Abelone is interested in making Ethiopian music and using music to convey positive messages about Ethiopia and to the world by focusing on women and children’s rights issues.
